Is this the UK’s first spirit dispensary?
Is this the UK’s first spirit dispensary?
Yes, you read that right – a spirit dispensary. Rum, to be precise.
Rum is fast becoming one of the most popular drinks in the UK, with consumers opting to drink less, but better quality. And while distilleries are tuning in and showing up with artisan, aged and locally produced rums, there's been less noise about what they're doing about environmental impact. Step in – Salford Rum.
A relatively new kid on the block that's growing fast; since launching in Summer 2018, Salford Rum has achieved national listings in John Lewis, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges and launched a dark spice to accompany its golden spice original. And now, the Salford-based business has set up what is believed to be the UK’s first eco-friendly rum dispensary, by partnering with the people-owned, Village Greens to dispense and refill their premium spiced rums.
Pop down to the Prestwich based co-op, and while you fill your basket locally sourced wholefoods and sustainable household goods, the team can fill up your empty Salford Rum bottle with a full 70cl size serve of Golden Spice Rum – reducing waste, supporting the environment and customers will make a saving on the usual retail price too.
Salford Rum co-founder James Harrison said:
“Ever since we launched our Golden Spice rum in August 2018, our customers have been asking us to offer a refill service. The bottle design makes it a real collectors item, so no one wants to throw it away. It’s great to be able to finally offer a this service in partnership with our long-standing customer, Village Greens, while helping to reduce waste and support the environment. We are looking for additional dispensary locations so we can offer Salford Rum refills throughout Greater Manchester, and at other ways we can reduce our impact on the environment.”

The Salford Rum Company is an award winning spirits producer based in Salford. Their Golden and Dark Spice rums are distilled, bottles and blended locally and inspired by the rums and spices imported into Salford Docks in the early 1900s. Since launching in Summer 2018, Salford Rum has achieved national listings in John Lewis, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges and in numerous regional hotels, bars, pubs and restaurants. Their instantly recognisable and unique bottle features a custom design by local artist, Dave Draws.
Village Greens is an exciting people owned co-op opened in summer 2014. Fed up with supermarket dominance we are bringing back fresh high quality fruit and veg, local where possible and organic where availability allows. We stock affordable, value for money wholefoods offering a range of sizes for all budgets, with self help items, and refillable household goods. Our policy is to trade with integrity, offering fair wages, local jobs, volunteer positions, and building sustainable relationships with our suppliers to bring the best possible goods and prices we can to our customers.

Willow
Willow is our 380L column still. The name Willow was chosen by Salford resident Paul Sly and is a reference to the willow trees that grow alongside the banks of the River Irwell that flows through our great city. Salford itself is named after the very same Willow trees, originally derived from the Anglo-Saxon Sealhford "sallow-tree ford".
The Willows was also the name of the stadium that was the home of Salford Rugby League from 1901 - 2011.
