Our story
We're Tommy & James and we founded Salford Rum in 2018. Like all the best idea's, it was a drunken one.... we couldn't understand why there was so much choice for gin, but only mass produced options for our favourite tipple, spiced rum. So we decided create our own. 8 months and just £8000 later we launched our Original Spiced Rum. We loaded Tommy's Seat Ateca and pitched up a stall at a local makers market (photo below👇). We sold out that day and the rest is history.
Our Heritage
While researching the history of rum we discovered the deep links between Caribbean rum and UK docks. We wanted to capture that history and tell the story of our own docks in Salford. We found old dock records in the local museum and used the imports of Caribbean rums and spices to develop the recipe for our Original Spiced Rum. All our rums are inspired by the docks, the imports and the workers of our great city.
The Bottle
We wanted to capture the rich heritage in our bottle, so we commission local artist Dave Draws to produce a unique map design of 1900's Salford Docks. You may spot some references to the Irish folk song Dirty Old Town - originally written about Salford.
Our Home
Nestled under the railway arches close to Salford Central station and just a stones throw to Manchester city centre, The Dirty Old Town Distillery is the home of Salford Rum. We create, distill, blend and bottle our rums in the heart of Salford. Each weekend we welcome guests to our Rum Experience.
